  4. Best guaranteed approval credit cards for bad credit

When it comes to credit cards and other types of loans, there’s no such thing as guaranteed approval. Approval is always at the discretion of the lender, and there’s no rule that guarantees everyone a line of credit. However, there are credit cards out there with extremely high approval odds and—often—instant approval.

Learn how to get a guaranteed approval credit card when you have bad credit, and what credit cards best meet your needs.

What’s a guaranteed approval credit card?

A “guaranteed approval” credit card is one with incredibly high approval odds and usually instant approval upon submitting an application.

There’s technically no such thing as a truly guaranteed approval credit card, as the lender always has the power to accept or reject a borrower’s request for credit. However, there are some cards that are so likely to approve applicants (usually boasting approval odds of 98%–99%) that they fall under the designation of “guaranteed approval.”

If you have bad credit and have been rejected for credit cards before, seek out guaranteed approval cards, so your application is likely to be approved.

Are there really guaranteed approval credit cards for bad credit?

There’s no credit card that guarantees that every single applicant will be approved, but there are many credit cards that approve close to 100% of people who apply. These credit cards are specifically designed for borrowers with bad credit or no credit history.

How do I get a guaranteed approval credit card when I have bad credit?

There are three ways to get a guaranteed approval credit card when you have bad credit:

  1. Get a secured card: A secured credit card requires a security deposit as collateral. This protects the lender against risky borrowers (i.e., ones who are less likely to pay their bills). This added protection means the lender is much more likely to approve anyone willing to put down a deposit for their secured credit card.
  2. Apply for cards with high approval odds: When you’re hunting for a credit card, look for ones that advertise “high approval odds” or disclose the percentage of applicants who qualify (look for 98% or higher). Not only do these statistics bode well for your application, but credit cards that advertise high approval odds are usually marketing to bad credit holders who are worried about qualifying for credit cards.
  3. Focus on cards with no credit check: If you’re hesitant to apply for credit cards knowing you have negative marks (like bankruptcies or foreclosures) on your credit report, seek out a card that boasts no credit check requirement. You can apply and be approved for these cards based on the information you provide in your application, and the lender won’t make any inquiries into your credit.

Best guaranteed approval credit cards for bad credit

Through our credit card research, we’ve found the following cards give the best chances of approval, even if your credit report is on the scary side. In fact, some of the following don’t even require a credit check to be approved. Check out the top six credit cards that offer as close to guaranteed approval as you can get.

Why It's Great

Unsurprisingly, the number one guaranteed approval credit card is secured. Secured credit cards require security deposits, which act as collateral (meaning your lender will keep your deposit if you fail to pay your bills).

Because this reduces risk for your lender, even borrowers with terrible credit histories can sometimes get secured cards if they’re willing to pay a deposit.

No card gives you a better chance of getting approved than the OpenSky® Secured Visa®. In fact, the issuer won’t even perform a credit check when you apply for the card. This is great for two reasons:

  1. You won’t get a hard inquiry on your credit report. Hard inquiries happen when a lender looks into your credit history, dropping your credit score a few points.
  2. Anyone can qualify. It doesn’t matter if you bad credit, no credit, or serious derogatory marks (such as bankruptcies) on your credit report. When you apply for the OpenSky® Secured Visa®, your lender won’t see any of them.

That’s already remarkable, but it’s not where this card’s easy approval ends. Unlike almost every other credit card, the OpenSky® Secured Visa® doesn’t even require you to have a checking account. If you’re not yet financially established or you're just getting back on your feet after a few mishaps, you can still get this credit card and use it to build a borrowing history.

To help you build credit, this card reports to Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion—the three major credit bureaus that generate your credit report. This can help you establish or rebuild your credit score.

Beware this card has an annual fee that can get pricey, but if you want guaranteed credit now and have at least $300 for a security deposit, the OpenSky® Secured Visa® is worth looking into.

Credit Score

Why It's Great

The Surge Mastercard® is an unsecured credit card that offers instant approval for applicants with bad credit and initial credit limits that go as high as $1,000. While it has fees to consider, it doesn’t require any money upfront, so it might be a good short-term solution if you need money fast and want to be approved right away.

After just 6 months of using your card and making on-time payments, you’ll be automatically considered for a credit limit increase that could double your limit. In other words, you could have a $2,000 line of credit on the Surge Mastercard® in 6 months.

Many credit cards for no credit or bad credit only offer credit limits of around $200–$300, making the Surge card a unique offering. Not to mention, this card also helps borrowers build credit with features like comprehensive credit reporting and free monthly credit scores.

Again, the fees are something to look out for as they can add up fast, especially in the second year when monthly fees kick in. But if you’re looking for fast credit and a way to build or rebuild your borrowing history, the Surge may be worth considering.

Pros & Cons

Pros

Credit Limit

$500–$3,000

Why It's Great

The Prosper® Card offers a high credit limit for an unsecured credit card for bad credit, making it a top-tier guaranteed approval credit card with $1,000+ limit. You can qualify for an initial credit line of $500–$3,000 with the potential for automatic credit limit increases.

This means your chances of getting approved for a $1,000 credit limit or higher are very good—especially compared to other credit cards for poor credit and the limits they offer. Even if at first you’re only approved for the minimum line of credit, you’ll be eligible for an automatic credit limit increase in just 3 months.

Better yet, the Prosper® Card is unsecured, so there’s no security deposit requirement. And while there’s usually a $39 annual fee, you can get it waived for the first year if you set up autopay on your account. All of this to say, you’ll have access to your full credit limit right away without getting any fees or deposits taken out.

Finally, the Prosper® Card doesn’t charge credit card cash advance fees, meaning you can get cash from your credit card at an ATM without being charged the usual 5% of the amount that other cards charge.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • No deposit required
  • No cash advance fees
  • Fast application
  • Credit limit increases available after 3 months
  • Foreign transactions are available

Why It's Great

The Total Visa® offers incredibly high approval odds and instant approval in almost all cases, making it one of the most accessible credit cards with no security deposit.

The application process is quick and easy, and only requires the following information:

  • Name
  • Email address
  • Physical address (no P.O. boxes)
  • Phone number
  • Date of birth
  • Social Security number
  • Employment status
  • Net monthly income
  • Estimated monthly expenses

You’re extremely likely to be approved right away for an initial credit limit of $300.

Although you’ll be able to access your line of credit quickly without needing to put down a security deposit, you’ll be charged an $89 program fee upon opening your account. This means you’ll only have access to $211 in credit until you pay off your program fee charge.

The Total Visa® reports your payment activity to all three major credit bureaus, making it a good option for borrowers with no credit or bad credit who are looking to improve their credit scores. However, program fees aren’t the only cost you should know about. The Total Visa® also has an annual fee and monthly servicing fees, making it a somewhat expensive card. Nonetheless, it’s one of the easiest instant approvals you can get for an unsecured credit card.

Why It's Great

The Petal® 1 Visa® (and its sister card, the Petal® 2) is a unique and generous credit card. Not only can almost anyone qualify—even those without Social Security numbers or credit histories—but it also comes absolutely free of annual fees and foreign transaction fees. To qualify for the card you must have the following:

  • A bank account that’s been open at least 3 months
  • An income

To apply for the Petal® 1 Visa®, you have to go through the Petal® credit card pre-approval process. The issuer will then let you know whether you’re eligible to submit an official application for:

  • Both the Petal® 1 and Petal® 2 credit cards
  • Only the Petal® 1 credit card
  • Neither card

You should apply for the Petal® 2 if given the option, but if you don’t qualify, you’ll still most likely be allowed to apply for a Petal® 1 credit card. The Petal® 1 is a great easy-approval card, especially considering it’s unsecured, free of fees, and a flexible credit limit.

While the Petal® 1 doesn’t have a set cashback program like the Petal® 2, it still offers rewards when you shop with certain merchants. Additionally, the card offers an Uber credits program, which helps you earn rewards towards Uber trips when you pay with your Petal® 1 credit card.

Why It's Great

The Credit One Bank® Platinum Visa® is a rare credit card. It’s easy to get, often offers on-the-spot approval, and even has cashback rewards. As you may know, finding a credit card for bad credit is difficult. Finding a card that gives rewards is nearly impossible. Not only does it offer high approval odds and instant approval, but it doesn’t require a security deposit, helps borrowers rebuild credit, and gives 1% cashback rewards on select purchases, including:

  • Gas
  • Groceries
  • Your monthly mobile phone, internet, cable, and satellite TV services bills

The card also offers credit-building resources like monthly credit reporting, Experian credit report monitoring, flexible due dates, and customizable account notifications.

Keep in mind that the card does have one notable downside: an expensive annual fee. The Credit One Bank® Platinum Visa® charges an annual fee of $75 the first year, and $99 after that.

Our editorial team operates independently (with no influence from our affiliates or our advertising team) so as to avoid compromising the objectivity of our reviews.
