Quick Review

The U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® card offers an extensive list of rewards earning opportunities. While you can save with literally every purchase using the card, you must know how to use the card correctly in order to make the most out of its program. Here’s what you can get:

  • 5% back on two bonus categories for up to $2,000 (combined) in spending quarterly
  • 5% back on prepaid flight, hotel, and car reservations booked through the Rewards Travel Center
  • Unlimited 2% back on an everyday category (gas or charging stations, groceries, restaurants, etc.)
  • Unlimited 1% back on everything else
  • 0% APR for first 15 billing cycles
  • $200 welcome bonus when you spend $1,000 in first 120 days

There is a lot to like about this card’s cashback rewards program. The 2% and 1% categories are unlimited and the 5% cashback categories could help you save big on travel and two other bonus categories.

But in order to take advantage of this card’s program, you must choose your bonus categories for the 5% and 2% cashback tiers carefully. If you regularly commute to work or take long trips, the gas station category might work best for you. However, if you find yourself running to the grocery store multiple times a week, the groceries category will help you rack up the most savings.

Pros:

  • 0% APR for first 15 billing cycles
  • 1%–5% rewards rate
  • $200 welcome bonus
  • No annual fee

Cons:

  • Foreign transaction fees
  • 5% rewards are capped
  • Complicated rewards

U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® Feature Breakdown

Learn more about the U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® card’s key features and how they can help you meet your credit card needs.

Fees

  • Annual fee: $0
  • Balance transfer fee: 3% or $5 (whichever is greater)
  • Cash advance fee: 5% or $10 (whichever is greater)
  • Foreign transaction fee: 2%
  • Late payment fee: Up to $41

Interest Rates

  • Purchase APR: 18.24%–28.24% (variable)
  • Introductory purchase APR: 0% for first 15 billing cycles
  • Introductory balance transfer APR: 0% for first 15 billing cycles
  • Balance transfer APR: 18.24%–28.24% (variable)
  • Cash advance APR: 28.99%

The introductory purchase and balance transfer APRs are tremendously helpful for people acquiring the card to make larger purchases or settle debt on pre-existing cards. Just make sure to pay off all outstanding charges before the introductory period ends, as your interest rate can potentially skyrocket afterward.

Rewards

There are plenty of opportunities to earn cash back using the U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® card. Here’s how it works:

  • 5% cash back on two bonus categories for up to $2,000 (combined) quarterly
  • 5% cash back on prepaid bookings made through the Rewards Travel Center
  • 2% cash back on one everyday category
  • 1% cash back on everything else

Bonus categories must be chosen every quarter, otherwise you’ll just receive 1% cashback rate on all purchases. This isn’t as convenient as cards that update automatically and have non-rotating categories, so you’ll have to decide if the U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® card’s cashback program will work for your banking habits.

The 5% cashback categories are also capped at $2,000 per quarter, which only comes out to $500 in spending each month, making it more suitable for modest spenders. The 5% bonus cashback category varies, but may include:

  • Fast food
  • Home utilities
  • TV, internet, and streaming services
  • Department stores
  • Cell phone providers
  • Electronic stores
  • Sporting goods stores
  • Movie theaters
  • Gyms / fitness centers
  • Furniture stores
  • Select clothing stores
  • Ground transportation (e.g., bus tickets, train tickets, or taxi fares)

Luckily, the 2% and 1% cashback tiers are completely unlimited, although you still need to remember to select your everyday bonus category every quarter. Your 2% cashback bonus category options include:

  • Gas stations and EV charging stations
  • Grocery stores
  • Restaurants

Rewards Redemption

U.S. Bank makes redeeming your cashback rewards straightforward. All rewards can be redeemed as a statement credit, a rewards card, or directly into your U.S. Bank account.

However, it can take up to two billing cycles for your bonus cash to appear on your statement.

Welcome Bonus

The U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® card comes with a $200 welcome bonus. With a spending requirement of just $1,000 in your first 3 months, even users with modest budgets should be able to unlock the bonus cash.

Cash Advance

A cash advance is when you use your credit card to withdraw cash from an ATM. Like most credit cards on the market, the U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® card has incredibly high cash advance interest rates and fees.

Therefore, we recommend only using this card for purchases, not for withdrawing money.

Balance Transfers

A balance transfer consolidates debts into a single credit card, ideally one with low interest, so you can pay off your debts without snowballing your balance.

The good news is that the U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® card comes with an introductory 0% APR offer, so you can enjoy 15 months without interest on any balances you transfer within the first 60 days of card ownership.

Travel Benefits

In order to incentivize users to use the U.S. Bank Rewards Travel Center, the U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® card offers users 5% cash back on prepaid purchases made through the platform, including plane tickets, hotel rooms, and car rental bookings.

You also receive Visa Signature benefits, which gives you access to special discounts and deals at Visa Signature collection hotels, along with travel and emergency assistance services and roadside dispatch services.

While these travel benefits may be helpful, the card still has a 2% foreign transaction fee and no travel insurance, which isn’t ideal for frequent flyers.

Other Benefits

The U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® card has a reasonable amount of additional benefits. Here’s what it comes with:

  • Zero fraud liability
  • ID Navigator Identity Theft Protections
  • 24-hour cardholder inquiry service
  • Lost and stolen card assistance
  • Visa Signature benefits
  • Access to the U.S. Bank ExtendPay™ Plan
  • Flexible redemption options
  • Access to the Rewards Travel Center

The U.S. Bank ExtendPay™ Plan is perfect for spacing out payments on large purchases without any interest, just a small monthly fee. You also still get to earn rewards on those purchases.

Authorized Users

Authorized users are allowed on the U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® card. They must be at least 16 years old and you can add up to 7 authorized users on one credit card.

U.S. Bank does not charge any additional fees for authorized users.

Credit Reporting

U.S. Bank reports to major credit bureaus at the end of every billing month. This means you can use your U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® card knowing that your credit report will be consistently updated.

You can also check your credit score for free in the U.S. Bank mobile app or on their online banking site.

Should You Get the U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature®?

FinanceJar verdict

We would recommend this card for people with routine spending habits who don’t mind selecting their bonus categories every month. The $200 welcome bonus, up to 5% in cashback rewards, and 0% APR offers for purchases and balance transfers make this card very inviting for prospective cardholders.

The biggest deterrent is the complex rewards system. So only consider the card if you’re willing to stay on top of managing it to get the most out of your cash back.

Who is this card for?

  • Families with consistent weekly expenses: Given that you have to select your bonus categories every quarter, this card would work well for families who spend similar amounts of money at the same places every week or month.
  • People with high utility bills: You can save up to 5% on utilities when you select it as your bonus category. This would be perfect for people with high AC, heat, or electricity bills every month.
  • Commuters and roadtrippers: Given that you can earn unlimited 2% cashback on gas and election charging stations, the U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® card is great for people who drive to work every day or take frequent road trips.

How the Cards Compare

While both are issued by U.S. Bank, the U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® card and U.S. Bank Altitude® Go Visa Signature® card are structured very differently and come with an entirely different set of rewards.

The U.S. Bank Altitude® Go Visa Signature® card is a points credit card that offers the following:

  • $200 value welcome bonus when you spend $1,000 in your first 90 days
  • 4x points on dining, takeout, and restaurants
  • 2x at groceries, grocery delivery, streaming, gas stations, and EV charging stations
  • 1x on everything else

You also get a $15 streaming credit and all the same additional bonuses as the U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® card. The most notable difference between the two cards is that the U.S. Bank Altitude® Go Visa Signature® card does not have rotating or limited bonus categories, which makes saving more straightforward.

U.S. Bank Altitude® Go Visa Signature® Advantages & Disadvantages

  • Straightforward rewards
  • No foreign transaction fees

How the Cards Compare

With a lower spending requirement for the welcome bonus and similarly high rewards, the Chase Freedom Unlimited® is another great cashback credit card to consider. Here’s what you can get:

  • $200 welcome bonus when you spend $500 in your first 3 months
  • 5% on travel purchases made through the Chase Unlimited Rewards
  • 3% on dining and drugstore purchases
  • 1.5% on everything else

You also get trip cancellation and interruption insurance, purchase protection, auto rental collision damage waiver, and other helpful additional benefits. However, it has a 3% foreign transaction fee, which is even higher than the U.S. Bank card’s, so may not be a great resource abroad.

Chase Freedom Unlimited® Advantages & Disadvantages

Pros

  • Less limiting rewards rate
  • Lower spending requirement for welcome bonus
  • More travel-related benefits

Cons

  • Fewer 5% cashback categories
  • Higher foreign transaction fee
