The Chevron/Texaco Techron Advantage® Card offers 3¢–8¢ back per gallon on Chevron purchases, but lacks high earnings potential.

Rewards

  • Welcome Bonus

37¢/gal for fuel purchases at Chevron and Texaco stations for the first 90 days

  • Gas

6–8¢/gal for eligible fuel purchases made with the Chevron or Texaco mobile app

  • Gas

3¢/gal on other eligible fuel purchases with Chevron or Texaco

Quick Review

The Chevron/Texaco Techron Advantage® Card is a no-annual-fee gas card that earns you Fuel Credits on purchases of gas from Chevron and Texaco stations. These Fuel Credits translate into savings of a mere 3¢/gallon, a rate that lags behind branded competitors and general rewards cards alike.

To put into perspective just how little that is: if you pay $40 for 10 gallons of gas, those 10 gallons would net you 30¢ of savings with this card, whereas a rewards card with a 2% cash back rate for fuel purchases would earn you 80¢. Even a 1% cash back rate—the lowest you’ll find anywhere—would still earn 40¢ on those ten gallons.

This card’s welcome offers boost that rate: for your first 90 days, you’ll save 37¢/gallon, and for a limited time you’ll also earn 6¢–8¢/gallon on Plus, Supreme, and Premium fuel.

As a store card, the Chevron/Texaco Techron Advantage® Card can only be used to make purchases at Chevron and Texaco gas stations or at select Synchrony Car Care™ partners (typically auto parts/repair businesses). You also won’t earn Fuel Credits on non-gas purchases.

Luckily, when you apply for a Chevron/Texaco Techron Advantage® Card, you’ll first be evaluated for the Chevron/Texaco Techron Advantage® Visa® Card, which allows you to earn Fuel Credits on all purchases and can be used much more widely. If your credit isn’t good enough to qualify, you’ll then be considered for the Chevron/Texaco Techron Advantage® Card.

Although this card made our list for the best gas cards for bad credit, the Chevron/Texaco Techron Advantage® Card doesn’t hold up well against the competition if you’re not a bad credit holder. You’re better off looking for a general-use rewards card that earns cash back on gas purchases.

Pros:

  • No annual fee
  • 37¢/gallon on all fuel purchases in first 90 days
  • 6¢/gallon on Plus fuel and 8¢/gallon on Supreme or Premium for a limited time
  • 6 months of 0% APR on purchases of at least $199 with Synchrony Bank’s promotional financing

Cons:

  • High APR
  • Can only be used with select companies
  • Low rewards rates
  • Can’t earn Fuel Credits on non-fuel purchases

Chevron/Texaco Techron Advantage® Card Feature Breakdown

Here’s a look at the Chevron/Texaco Techron Advantage® Card’s rewards, fees, and major features to help you decide if it’s the right gas card for you.

Fees

  • Annual fee: $0
  • Cash advance fee: $10 or 5% (whichever is greater)
  • Late payment fee: Up to $40

Interest Rates

  • Purchase APR: 29.99% (variable)
  • Cash advance APR: 29.99% (variable)

Rewards

With the Chevron/Texaco Techron Advantage® Card, you earn Fuel Credits which translate into savings of 3¢/gallon on fuel purchases (excluding commercial aviation and marine fuel). There is no limit to the number of gallons that will earn you Fuel Credits.

While you can use your card for all purchases made at Chevron or Texaco stations as well as Synchrony Car Care™ partners, you will only earn Fuel Credits and receive discounts on purchases of gasoline.

Welcome Bonus

You will earn 37¢/gallon at Chevron and Texaco stations in your first 90 days of card ownership.

Also, you’ll earn 6¢/gallon on Plus fuel and 8¢/gallon on Supreme or Premium fuel when you pay with your card through the Chevron or Texaco mobile apps. This is a limited time offer though, so this may not be the rewards rate you consistently enjoy.

Cash Advance

You can only use your Chevron/Texaco Techron Advantage® Card to take out cash advances if you have been approved for a credit limit of at least $500. You’ll need to pay a fee of either $10 or 5% of the amount of your advance (whichever is greater), and you’ll be charged interest at an annual rate of 29.99% (variable). Because the cost is so great, we strongly recommend against taking out cash advances.

Other Benefits

The Chevron/Texaco Techron Advantage® Card comes with a few benefits:

  • $0 fraud liability: If someone steals your card, you won’t be held liable for any fraudulent charges.
  • Synchrony Car Care™ Acceptance: Besides Chevron and Texaco stations, you can use this card to make purchases at any Synchrony Car Care™ partners, including select auto repair businesses and auto parts sellers.
  • Promotional financing: No interest on qualifying purchases of at least $199 as long as you pay off your balance in 6 months.

Authorized Users

You can add authorized users to your Chevron/Texaco Techron Advantage® Card and receive cards for them with no additional charge.

Adding a family member to your card as an authorized user to a store card can be a way to help a teenager establish a credit score and build their credit while limiting what purchases they can make.

Credit Reporting

Synchrony Bank will report your card activity to the three major credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion) as well as Innovis. This information will be used to update your credit report.

Customer Service

If you have any questions or concerns about your Chevron/Texaco Techron Advantage® Card, you can contact Synchrony Bank customer service in several ways. You can chat online with their virtual assistant through your account page, or call Synchrony Bank at one of the following telephone numbers:

Should You Get the Chevron/Texaco Techron Advantage® Card?

FinanceJar verdict

Even if Chevron and Texaco are your preferred gas stations, the Chevron/Texaco Techron Advantage® Card’s savings rates won’t make a meaningful dent in your gas expenses. The Visa version offers more competitive rates, but you should seriously consider a basic rewards card before making a final decision. Many everyday rewards cards offer more opportunities to earn and redeem points, more valuable perks, and offer lower APR than either of these cards.

Who is this card for?

  • Regular Chevron and Texaco customers: As the only people who can take advantage of this card’s savings, you’ll appreciate this card’s massive welcome bonuses during your first 90 days. The promotional financing offered by Synchrony Bank is also an unusual and fairly useful benefit not offered by other gas cards.

Comparable Cards

In this section, we’ll go over the differences between the Chevron/Texaco Techron Advantage® Card and its Visa equivalent, plus how it stands up against some notable competitors.

  • Gas

3¢–8¢/gal on fuel purchases at Chevron and Texaco stations

  • Everything Else

10¢/gal in fuel credits for making eligible non-fuel purchases with your card

How the Cards Compare

The Chevron/Texaco Techron Advantage® Visa® Card has only a few major differences from its store card sibling. Instead of saving you a flat 3¢ per gallon, this card saves you more cents per gallon once you’ve spent a certain amount on your card:

  • 2¢/gallon upon spending between $100–199.99
  • 4¢/gallon upon spending between $200–299.99
  • 6¢/gallon upon spending between $300–399.99
  • 8¢/gallon upon spending between $400–499.99
  • 10¢/gallon upon spending above $500

Any purchases you make with your card, excluding Chevron/Texaco purchases and purchases made with any other fuel sellers, contribute to passing these thresholds.

These higher rewards obviously make the card a better investment. If you can’t qualify for this card, we suggest looking elsewhere rather than settling for the store card alternative.

Chevron/Texaco Techron Advantage® Visa® Card Advantages & Disadvantages

Pros

  • No annual fee
  • Same welcome offers as the non-Visa card
  • Can be used anywhere Visa is accepted
  • Cell phone protection (up to $300/claim)

Cons

  • Same high APR
  • Doesn’t allow balance transfers
  • 3% foreign transaction fee

  • Gas

10¢/gal on your next 35 Shell fuel purchases

  • Everything Else

10% Shell rebates on the first $1,200 you spend on all other eligible purchases

How the Cards Compare

If you’re sold on the idea of a brand-specific credit card, the Shell Fuel Rewards® Card offers a much higher savings of 10¢/gallon on up to 35 gallons and a 10% rebate on all non-gas Shell purchases.

You can also opt for the Shell Fuel Rewards® Mastercard® instead, which provides additional savings rebates on dining, grocery, and other purchases—though it falls short of other rewards cards’ rates.

Unless you take a lot of road trips and exclusively fill up at Shell stations, you’d probably still be better off with the average cashback card. However, if you have poor credit and are struggling to qualify for a good rewards card, the Shell Fuel Rewards® Card may be a valuable option.

Shell Fuel Rewards® Card Advantages & Disadvantages

Pros

  • No annual fee
  • Savings of 10¢ per gallon (up to 35 gallons)
  • 10% savings on first $1,200 of non-fuel Shell purchases each year
  • Save 30¢ per gallon (up to 35 gallons) on your first 5 gas purchases

Cons

  • High APR
  • Can’t be used at non-Shell businesses

  • Everything Else

1% cash back on all other eligible purchases

How the Cards Compare

As a secured credit card, the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards Secured approves applicants with lower credit scores and in return requires a security deposit of at least $200.

This card earns you three levels of cashback rewards:

  • 3% cash back on your choice of gas, dining, drug stores, travel, online shopping, or home improvement/furnishing expenses
  • 2% cash back at grocery stores and wholesale clubs
  • 1% cash back on all other purchases

You can change your 3% category monthly to match your spending. However, your 2%–3% categories switch to 1% cash back after your first $2,500 in purchases in those categories each year.

By setting your category of choice as gas each month (or during months you plan on driving a lot), you can earn a lot more money back while fueling up than you would with the Chevron card.

Chase Freedom Unlimited® Advantages & Disadvantages

Pros

  • No annual fee
  • 1%–3% rewards rate
  • Allows balance transfers
  • Basic Bank of America benefits

Cons

  • Requires minimum deposit of $200
  • High APR
  • Foreign transaction fees
