Quick Review

The Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards card is a low-cost but high-credit-requirement card that offers a variety of benefits to frequent travelers—even if you aren’t flying.

With the Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards card, you earn 5 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel and 1.25x miles on all other purchases. You can redeem your miles for travel purchases, travel reimbursements, or cash value.

You can also transfer your miles to more than a dozen hotel and airline loyalty programs, most of them at full value, making the Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards card an especially good option if you want to maximize your membership rewards with your eligible hotel or airline of choice.

However, it’s worth noting that few of these affiliated airlines are U.S.-based, which may be good news for international travelers flying with British Airways or Emirates, but may not benefit domestic travelers.

You won’t pay an annual fee or foreign transaction fees with the Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards card, but you’ll need a good or excellent credit score to qualify. In return, you’ll get special benefits including access to exclusive entertainment and dining opportunities offered through Capital One, price protection if your flight’s price drops after booking, and two complimentary visits to Capital One Lounges per year.

While not the card’s main draw, the introductory offer of 0% APR on purchases and balance transfers for 15 months is an unexpected bonus, as is the lack of fee for balance transfers after the intro period ends.

For its many benefits, the Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards card won a spot on our list of the best credit cards for freelancers as our pick for the best credit card for digital nomads.

Pros:

  • 1.25%–5% rewards rate
  • No annual fee or foreign transaction fees
  • 15 months of 0% APR on purchases and balance transfers
  • Transfer points to affiliated hotel/airline loyalty programs

Cons:

  • Requires good/excellent credit
  • Low base rewards rate
  • Potentially high APR

Rewards

With the Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards card, you can earn miles in two ways:

  • 5 miles per dollar spent on hotel rooms and car rentals booked through Capital One Travel
  • 1.25 miles per dollar spent on all other purchases

When it comes to redemption, one mile is equal to one cent (or 100 miles for $1). You can earn unlimited miles, and they won’t expire unless you close your account.

Miles can be redeemed when you book new flights, hotels, or car rentals through Capital One Travel, or redeemed as a statement credit for previously-made travel purchases booked anywhere. Some examples of eligible purchases include:

  • Air and rail travel
  • Rental cars
  • Taxis and limousines
  • Bus fare
  • Cruises
  • Timeshares
  • Travel agents

Like other Capital One rewards cards, you can also redeem your miles as cash back or gift cards, or at checkout when you shop at Amazon or pay using PayPal.

Welcome Bonus

If you spend at least $500 in your first 3 months after enrolling in the rewards program, you’ll earn 20,000 bonus miles, equal to $200 in travel expenses.

Cash Advance

You can take out cash advances with your Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards card, meaning you can use your credit card to withdraw cash. Cash advances incur a fee of the greater of $10 or 3% of the amount of your cash advance, with a variable 26.49% APR.

Balance Transfers

The Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards card lets you transfer balances from other credit cards. Balances you transfer to your card in the first 15 months after account opening will not be subject to APR but will cost you a fee amounting to 3% of your balance transfer. This fee will also apply to any future promotional APR you take advantage of with your account.

After your first 15 months, balance transfers have no fee but are subject to a 17.99%–27.99% (variable) APR that is based on your creditworthiness.

You cannot transfer balances from other Capital One accounts, including private label cards issued with Capital One retail affiliates.

Travel Benefits

Through Capital One Travel, cardholders can book hotels, flights, and car rentals, though you’ll only earn the 5% rewards rate on hotels and car rentals.

You can link select airline loyalty programs to your Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards account and earn rewards on flights booked through Capital One Travel.

However, you can transfer your Capital One miles to the following airline or hotel loyalty programs:

  • Aeromexico Club Premier
  • Aeroplan®
  • ALL – Accor Live Limitless
  • Asia Miles
  • Avianca LifeMiles
  • British Airways Executive Club
  • Choice Privileges®
  • Emirates Skywards
  • Etihad Guest
  • EVA Air Infinity MileageLands
  • Finnair Plus
  • Flying Blue
  • Qantas Frequent Flyer
  • Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer
  • TAP Miles&Go
  • Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles
  • Virgin Red

The above loyalty programs accept Capital One miles with a 1:1 transfer ratio, except for EVA Air Infinity MileageLands (2:1.5 transfer ratio) and Accor Live Limitless (2:1 transfer ratio).

With the Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards card, you’ll also get some additional travel benefits:

  • If you find a better price on your flight within 24 hours of booking through Capital One Travel, Capital One will reimburse you for the difference in cost.
  • Access to exclusive dining and entertainment events through Capital One Dining and Capital One Entertainment.
  • Two complimentary visits per year to Capital One Lounges, currently located in Denver, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Washington, DC.

Other Benefits

The Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards card also features some miscellaneous benefits which are typical for Capital One cards:

  • $0 liability for fraudulent charges made to your account.
  • Eno, Capital One’s virtual assistant, can alert you about suspicious account activity and provide virtual card numbers to give you another layer of protection when shopping online.
  • CreditWise, which offers free credit scores and explains updates to your credit.

If you’re approved for a Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards Visa Signature card, you’ll also get the following perks:

  • Travel accident insurance provides coverage for a qualifying loss when you charge your fare to your card.
  • Receive an auto rental collision damage waiver when you pay for your car rental with your Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards card.
  • Extend warranties on eligible products you purchase with your card.

Credit Reporting

Capital One reports credit bureaus every month, helping your credit report stay up to date.

Application and Approval

To be approved for a Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards card, you’ll need a good or excellent credit score, meaning a score above 690.

Applicants must also meet the following requirements:

  • At least 18 years old
  • Street address in the United States or Puerto Rico (including military locations) that is not a correctional institution
  • Monthly income that exceeds your monthly rent/mortgage payments by $425
  • Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number

Additionally, any of the following conditions are grounds for denial:

  • Applying for a Capital One credit card two or more times in 30 days
  • Being over your credit limit or having a past due Capital One credit card
  • Having a Capital One credit card account charged off in the past year

Unless you are responding to an offer that specifies a credit limit, Capital One will determine your credit limit based on the information provided in your application, including your income.

Should You Get the Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards Credit Card?

FinanceJar verdict

The Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards card is a great choice for international travelers who want to earn miles with every purchase and redeem them for travel expenses ranging from bus fares to travel agents. If your hotel or airline loyalty program is affiliated with Capital One, the ability to transfer miles at full value elevates this card above many competitors.

However, its base rewards rate of 1.25% is lower than other rewards cards, and domestic travelers will likely miss out on transferring miles because the largest U.S.-based airlines aren’t affiliated with Capital One.

Who is this card for?

  • International travelers: If you regularly travel abroad, you’ll appreciate the low fees, extra miles earned through Capital One Travel, and the ability to transfer your miles to many foreign airline loyalty programs.
  • Digital nomads: No annual fee or foreign transaction fees make the Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards card a great travel card for freelancers who want to keep their expenses low while they’re on the move. The ability to earn and redeem miles on more than just hotels and flights also helps you reap the benefits of a steady stream of rewards.

How the Cards Compare

Though the Bank of America® Travel Rewards card is a simpler card with fewer bells and whistles, you can redeem your rewards points for an extensive list of eligible travel, dining, and entertainment purchases.

Some of the more unusual types of eligible purchases include campgrounds, ferries, parking garages, and tourist attractions like carnivals, aquariums, and nightclubs.

Although it has a higher base rewards rate, the Bank of America® Travel Rewards card offers less flexible rewards redemption, and a lower rate of 3% cash back on travel purchases. The Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards is the better all-around card, unless you’re a member of Bank of America’s Preferred Rewards program, which will earn you higher rewards with the Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card.

Bank of America® Travel Rewards Credit Card Advantages & Disadvantages

Pros

  • No annual or foreign transaction fees
  • Earn 3x points on purchases made through the Bank of America Travel Center
  • Earn 1.5x points on all other purchases

  • 2x miles at grocery stores (including delivery services)
  • 2x miles per dollar on American Airlines purchases
  • 1x miles on all other purchases

If you fly domestically with American Airlines on a regular basis, the American Airlines AAdvantage MileUpSM card is a very attractive option. However, international travelers may prefer the Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards card for its lack of foreign transaction fees.

How the Cards Compare

The Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards card offers many of the same insurance benefits and gives you access to Capital One Dining and Entertainment opportunities, but earns you cash back instead of miles.

If you prefer an everyday rewards card that provides some bonus cash back on travel rather than a specialized travel card, the Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards card is a good alternative that provides many of the same benefits as the Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards card.
