    3. What credit cards can I get with fair credit?
    4. How do I choose a credit card for fair credit?

Having a fair credit score may not sound that bad, but in the world of credit, it’s definitely undesirable. Fair credit scores (FICO scores between 580–669) are on the low end of the credit scale, and discount you from qualifying for the majority of credit cards. However, there’s still hope.

The best way to get your credit score up to the good range and start qualifying for better cards, is to get a credit card for fair credit and use it responsibly. Luckily, there are some decent credit cards available to those with fair or average credit—and we’ve found the best ones.

    • 1% cash back on all purchases
    • 1.25% cash back on all purchases after making 6 on-time monthly payments

The Capital One® Platinum Mastercard® doesn’t come with any rewards, but it offers the standard Capital One benefits, including credit monitoring through CreditWise and no foreign transaction fees.

Capital One also reports monthly activity to the major credit bureaus, so you can build credit quickly by using your card responsibly. For no security deposit and no annual fee, this card provides an inexpensive temporary solution for fair credit borrowers ready to move onto good-credit cards.

    • Travel

5x points on eligible travel purchases

    • Everything Else

1x points on all other eligible purchases

    Why It's Great

If you have average credit and are looking for a lucrative travel rewards card, the Credit One Bank Wander® Card is probably the top of your list. The Credit One Bank Wander® Card is one of the most rewarding credit cards on the market, offering cashback rates on par with luxury travel cards (which are usually only available for excellent credit). Here’s how the rewards work:

    • 10x points on hotels and rental cars booked through the Credit One travel partner
    • 5x points on eligible flights, dining, and gas purchases
    • 1x points on everything else

On top of that, you’ll get a 10,000 point welcome bonus (worth $100) when you spend $1,000 in your first 3 months of borrowing.

The catch is that the card comes with a $95 annual fee. While this is easily made up in the first year by the welcome bonus alone, you’ll have to use the card enough in following years to earn rewards that outweigh the cost of the fee.

    Pros & Cons

    Pros

    • 1%–10% cash back
    • $100 welcome bonus
    • Available to average credit borrowers

    • Everything Else

1% cash back on all other eligible purchases

    Why It's Great

The Upgrade Triple Cash Rewards card offers fair-credit borrowers a unique opportunity to build credit. Rather than acting like a traditional credit card, the Upgrade Triple Cash Rewards acts as an installment loan—and reports your payments that way to the credit bureaus.

This means what you spend on the card will be tallied up at the end of the billing cycle and broken into fixed installment payments. And because your account activity is reported as an installment loan rather than revolving credit, having an Upgrade Triple Cash Rewards credit card can contribute to your credit mix (an important factor in your credit score).

On top of the credit-building potential, the Upgrade Triple Cash Rewards offers cashback in the form of 3% back on purchases in the following categories:

    • Home
    • Auto
    • Health

For everything else, you'll earn a cashback rate of 1%.

    Pros & Cons

    Pros

    • Cashback rewards
    • No fees
    • Predictable fixed repayments
    • Premium Visa® benefits
    • Available to holders of average credit

    Cons

    • Everything Else

1% cash back on all other eligible purchases

    Why It's Great

The Discover It® Student Cash Back is a great credit card for students with fair credit or not-yet-established credit scores. The rewards are generous, offering:

    • 5% cash back on rotating bonus categories
    • 1% cash back on everything else
    • Dollar-for-dollar cashback match your first year

Bonus categories rotate every quarter and can include gas, groceries, dining, or similar rewards groups. But what we love most about this card is how much it gives you in the first year of borrowing. Along with the cashback match, you'll get 6 months of 0% APR.

The no-interest period and doubled rewards the first year will no doubt help fund a big transition, like moving out of your family home or furnishing your first apartment.

    Pros & Cons

    Pros

    • $0 annual fee
    • No foreign transaction fees
    • Cashback rewards
    • Cashback bonuses in the first year
    • Introductory offers on APRs and fees
    • No fee for first late payment

    Cons

    • High APR
    • Complicated bonus rewards
    • Limited acceptance abroad

    What is fair credit?

Fair credit is a FICO credit score between 580–669 or a VantageScore between 601–660. While fair credit is also sometimes referred to as average credit, fair credit is actually below the mean American credit score, and is considered subprime.

Being in the subprime credit range means you’ll have a harder time qualifying for lines of credit (including loans and credit cards) and likely be offered less favorable borrowing terms (like higher interest rates).

What credit cards can I get with fair credit?

With a fair credit score you can qualify for the following types of credit cards:

    • Secured credit cards: Secured credit cards require a security deposit that’s usually equal to the credit limit. The deposit acts as collateral, so secured cards are easier to get if you have bad or fair credit.
    • Unsecured credit cards: If you don’t want to pay a security deposit, you can still qualify for unsecured cards with fair credit (or even bad credit in some cases). Unsecured cards may not require money upfront, but they often come with an annual fee when they’re for borrowers with fair credit.

How do I choose a credit card for fair credit?

To choose the right fair-credit credit card for you, consider the following questions:

    • Do you want a secured or unsecured card?
    • Are you willing to pay an annual fee?
    • Do you want cashback rewards?
    • How much credit do you need?
    • Are you going to regularly carry a balance?
    • Do you want the option to upgrade to a better credit card in time?

How you answer these questions and which ones hold priority for you will help you limit your search based on fees, interest rates, and borrowing benefits.

How we rate our credit cards

Getting a new credit card is a big decision. That's why we heavily weighted the following factors when determining the best credit cards for fair credit:

    • Fees
    • Rewards
    • Qualification requirements
    • Interest rates
    • Benefits
    • Borrowing terms

These factors, among many others, are part of our 5-star credit card rating methodology for all card categories. Our star ratings are unbiased and independent of our affiliates and advertisers.
