As travelers prepare for long-awaited vacations, Chase has boosted the sign-up bonus offer on their Chase Sapphire Reserve® luxury travel card from 60,000 to 80,000 points. New cardholders can access this welcome bonus when they sign up on or after October 18, 2022. However, they’ll need to spend quite a bit on the card to do so.
Here’s everything you need to know about how to get these bonus points, how they translate to extra cash in your wallet, and where to sign up for the Chase Sapphire Reserve® credit card.

How can you get the Chase Sapphire Reserve® 80,000-point sign-up bonus?
To earn 80,000 bonus points on the Chase Sapphire Reserve® card, you’ll need to spend $4,000 on purchases within the first 3 months after opening your account.
These “purchases” can’t be balance transfers, credit card cash advances, cash-like transactions, or betting transactions (e.g., lottery tickets or casino gaming chips).
You also won’t qualify for the bonus if any of the following apply to you:
- You already have a Sapphire Preferred or Sapphire Reserve® credit card
- You used to have a Sapphire Preferred or Sapphire Reserve® credit card and you received a new card member bonus in the past 48 months
- You’re applying to switch to the Sapphire Reserve® from a different Chase credit card
- Your account is in default (with overdue debts) when you meet the eligibility criteria

How much are Chase Sapphire Reserve® bonus points worth?
Exactly how much value you can get from Chase bonus points depends on how you redeem them. You’ll get 50% more value if you redeem them for travel through Chase Ultimate Rewards. 1
Chase points are worth 1.5 cents ($0.015) per point when you redeem them through Chase Ultimate Rewards, whereas they’re worth 1 cent per point when you redeem them as statement credit. 2
Here’s how that breaks down for your 80,000 points:
- Pay Yourself Back (statement credit): $800
- Chase Ultimate Rewards: $1,200
If you have a membership with one of Chase’s hotel or airline partners, you can also convert your points at a 1:1 ratio (meaning you can exchange each point on your Chase card for one point or mile in their affiliate’s rewards system).
Why now is the best time to get the Chase Sapphire Reserve® card
When the Chase Sapphire Reserve® credit card was first introduced in 2016, it came with the highest bonus ever offered on a Chase credit card: 100,000 points. 3 New members haven’t seen a welcome package this big since then, but 80,000 points is pretty close.
Previously, you could only earn 60,000 points as a sign-on bonus for the Chase Sapphire Reserve® card. 4 This substantial increase in the sign-up bonus is available for a limited time only (although Chase hasn’t specified exactly how long).
You’d need to do a good bit of spending to outweigh this card’s high annual fee, but if you’ve been contemplating getting a new luxury travel credit card, now is the best time to take advantage of all that the Chase Sapphire Reserve® credit card has to offer.
