When can you apply for a new Discover credit card?

You can only apply for a second Discover credit card after your first account has been open at least 12 months. So if you just got your first Discover card, you need to wait a year before applying for your next.

If you want a different Discover card and you already own two, you’ll need to close one of your accounts before applying for a new card.

What to consider before applying for a second Discover card

Here are some pros and cons of getting a new Discover card that you should keep in mind before you apply.

  • You still get a cashback match: Many credit card issuers won’t let you get a welcome bonus if you’ve already gotten one on a different card from that issuer. Notably, Discover allows you to get their first-year cashback match bonus on a new credit card—even if you’ve gotten it on another Discover card.
  • You can upgrade your current card: If you’re trying to get another card because your credit has improved and you qualify for better borrowing options, consider contacting Discover and asking whether you can upgrade your credit card. For example, Discover allows you to upgrade your secured credit card to an unsecured option and will refund your security deposit.
  • Your score may drop a few points: When you apply for a new line of credit, Discover will check your credit history by performing a hard pull, also known as a hard inquiry. This will dock a few points off your credit score.
  • More credit can be hard to handle: If you’re thinking of opening a second Discover account to chase after more rewards, be careful. Credit card debt can add up quickly, and having more credit may make overspending easier. Never spend more than you can pay off, otherwise you risk financial distress and credit damage.

Takeaways: You can have two Discover credit cards

  • You can only have two Discover cards open at a given time.
  • You can apply for a Discover card after you’ve already had an account open for 12 months.
  • You still get a cashback match welcome bonus when you open your second Discover card account.
  • Contact Discover about upgrading a current card to a better option.
